A Few Things About Riley
Writers are born not made.
To me this quote is not about whether a person is born with the skills to write, or if they can learn to write. To me this quote means that certain people are simply born to write; they have to write or else they do not feel complete. When you read about writer's, so many of them say "I always wanted to be a writer" or "I knew I wanted to write from the minute I learned how to read" or "I wrote my first story at the age of ten and have been penning things ever since." These are people who are born to be writers.
I wrote my first story at the age of twelve, holed up in my mother's dark, walk-in closet of which many of my nightmares were made. My first story was about a haunted house. Although I can't claim I actually remember the feeling I had while manically scratching out the words on notebook paper, I'm guessing it must have been intoxicating because I wanted to do it again, and again, and again.
Since then I've earned a Masters Degree in English, have written product descriptions for Home Depot (yes my words are all over the Home Depot website describing such exciting products as screws, numerous galvanized steel hardware parts for decks and such, grass seed, lawn fertilizer, plants, and my favorite--do it yourself books! They really were my favorite. Far less boring than the others, although lawn fertilizer, believe it or not, was quite interesting.) I've also worked at a copywriting company writing all types of copy including press releases, websites, editorials, medical blogs, brochures, etc. As the senior writer/editor I was responsible for ghostwriting articles for dental journals, dental manufacturers, consultants, and life coaches. Recently, however, I've returned to working with special needs children which, although extremely demanding at times and consequently exhausting, is THE most fulfilling occupation I've ever had. Unfortunately, it barely pays the bills.
When I'm not working, writing, or editing I have many other interests. I often have some major remodeling project I'm working on. I've remodeled my kitchen, bathroom, refinished the floors, built the deck on my house, constructed a patio...well you get the idea. In the summer I love to swim, play Ultimate Frisbee, tennis, landscape, or anything else outdoors. In the winter I'm a recluse. I read, write, and read about writing. But the truth is, mostly I'm working--summer and winter. However, if I really have "hobby time" I build miniatures.
